Being Affective is Truly Effective! 

Come learn how affective learning can engage and empower your students’ learning and your teaching. During this presentation we will explore how practical affective pedagogical practices can create nurturing mental models about student’s own learning, language uses, and their own linguistic competence. Join me in a journey with lots of play, imagination, and curiosity. Destination: language learning ownership.

Juan Uribe is a teacher trainer whose passion is studying and sharing how children learn languages affectively through play, games, storytelling, and puppeteering.He has been in an amazing journey visiting language schools for children around the world where he has both conducted teacher development programs as well as enchanted young audiences with Buddy the Frog. 

Juan holds a Bachelors degree in Education from the Catholic University in São Paulo (PUC-SP) and a Masters in Education in Human Development and Applied Psychology from the University of Toronto. He is both a puppeteer and a storyteller as well as the  writer of a blog called Children Learning English Affectively.

Covert syllabus is a term used to describe the values and beliefs that are subtly expressed in course books. The aim of this talk is to identify the covert syllabus behind common classroom activities and how to adapt these activities to bring up deeper discussions about inclusion and social values.

3)  Lucas Rigonato 

Brave New World: an experience in Critical Language Teaching - Talk

In this talk participants see the results of an experience using the literary classic "Brave New World" with a group of pre-intermediate English learners in a language course in Goiânia. Participants are encouraged to take part in a discussion about Critical Language Teaching at the end of the session.

4) Simone Carneiro de Mendonça 

Boosting students' speaking time - Workshop

How many times have you asked your students a question, only to be met by a stony silence or at best a one-word answer? This presentation will provide you with techniques which encourage students to talk more in class and help them build up language and fluency expected from English-speakers.

5) Nina Loback 

A New concept on Motivation: The Ideal future language self. Workshop

Keeping students motivated is one of the most complicated challenges for teachers, therefore it is a frequent topic in presentations and publications. But is there anything new? Let’s explore the influence of L2 self and identity on the language learners and how teachers can use it as a tool.

Activities to teach YL without mystery. - Workshop

We will provide useful tips on how to work with children and also some details every teacher must consider. Some handy activities and games, easy to be planned and prepared will be demonstrated. These activities will help teachers be successful, reach their teaching goals and promote an enjoyable environment when working with kids.

Making The Most Of A Text - Workshop

In this session, I will explore how you can make students aware of the potential in a text by focusing on practical activities they can do in class and at home, and how we can offer a variety of activities, including more tasks more challenging than what we usually find. 

8)  Antonio Moraes 

Teaching Grammar: Considering the learning stages for well-planned lessons - Talk

Does teaching grammar mean forcing students to memorize rules? This presentation focuses on the lesson stages in the PPP framework, coming from the learners' learning stages, with practical ideas on how to teach new language to students and guide them from ignorance to active use in effective and meaningful ways.

Rapport: "Respect, empathy, and authenticity" for creating effective learning environments -Talk

This presentation aims to provide directions for using Rapport, providing a good environment in your classroom, and helping students learn. Some tips and practical ideas to improve this area, focusing on really looking at your students and gaining their trust – without losing control.

The Five C’s of Grammar – Thinking Grammatical Structures More Critically - Workshop

As stated by Diane Larsen-Freeman in her Grammar Dimensions, the teaching of grammar might at times be downplayed if too much emphasis is placed on communication only. One must keep in mind, however, that if our goal is to enable students to become successful communicators in English, a crucial means to this end is to teach them to use grammatical structures. Based on and adapted from five simple critical thinking strategies as described by Rob King, co-author of Inquiry: A Student Handbook for 21^st Century Learning, this highly hands-on workshop will explore ways to help students become aware of other dimensions of grammar – with a special focus on the English verb system - by having them look at it more critically and expand their depth of thinking it.

 Making your coursebook more appealing to Young Learners - Workshop  

In this hands-on workshop we are going to present ideas on how to make a coursebook activity come to life by using a variety of resources and teaching techniques. Through these adaptations we believe we will not only improve rapport but also the quality of learning taking place.

12)  Hulgo Freitas

Moving Beyond the Intermediate Plateau - Workshop

While there is an agreement as to what lower levels need to know, there is no overall consensus as to which items are “advanced”.  This workshop aims at providing teachers with practical ideas for teaching upper levels.

Teachers will be able to take a look at research done on what to include on an advanced syllabus and how to organise and grade learners. Additionally, we will look at some noun phrases and noun-based structures and how they are used in real life. 

In order to help learners leave the upper-level language plateau, teachers must be fully aware of what exactly to demand from them and how to make their learning profitable.

Technology in the classroom: promoting teacher efficiency and student engagement - Demonstration

Presentation about the use of technology and especially the use of slides as a key tool in the classroom. The presentation will promote Google Slides and other Google tools as a way of promoting teacher efficiency and student engagement.
