PLENARY SESSIONS

PERSPECTIVES IN BILINGUAL EDUCATION

Bilingual Education has been extensively discussed in the English language teaching field in Brazil among professionals and the general public. That demands a deeper understanding of the concept and its perspectives. In this presentation, participants will be exposed to myths and research that have informed the bilingual education scenario and broaden their repertoire of the subject to impact future discussions and the experience of their learners in their own contexts.

Marcela Cintra is an Academic Coordinator at Cultura Inglesa São Paulo. She has been working with English language teaching for over 20 years, been involved in teacher training and development programmes and presented in ABCI, LABCI, BRAZ-TESOL, TESOL and IATEFL conferences. A CELTA, ICELT and Delta tutor, she has an MA in TESOL.

TRANSLANGUAGING PEDAGOGY AND THE TEACHING OF EMERGENT BILINGUALS IN BRAZIL

The recent growing offer of bilingual education in Brazil is simultaneously very attractive and extremely dangerous. Access to materials, qualified teachers and coherent curriculum design are some of the issues we should be more concerned about. How can we plan and develop responsible academic projects for the teaching of emergent bilinguals in Brazil? What has to be legally considered? How do emergent bilinguals learn through an additional language? How can Translanguaging pedagogy help us make learning more effective? These are some of the questions we are going to approach in this lecture, based on the most recent international studies in the field of bilingualism and bilingual education.

Rita Ladeia holds a B.A. in English Language and Literature (PUC-SP) and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), in the area of Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages.  She is a Phd candidate in Education and has been researching in the area of Curriculum design for Bilingual Education in Brazil. Her main interests are in curriculum design for bilingual education, teaching for biliteracy, multiliteracy, and teacher development, CLIL and PBL.

Rita is a professor at Instituto Singularidades, São Paulo, where she teaches in two graduate studies programs: Bilingual Education and Neuroscience at School. She also teachers in the graduate studies program of Neuroscience and Cognition, at IENH, in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul.

She is one of the coordinators of the Braz-Tesol Bilingualism and Bilingual Education SIG and has been working as a consultant for several K-12 schools and language institutes all over the country.
